@NOTE: these docs have been slightly edited to reflect the changes to the GEOS system with the intriduction of GEOS 2.0
---GeoRep Ken
Congratulations on your new Real Time Clock for GEOS. The circuit and programming were done by Tim Corcoran: we think he did a great job, and we think you'll agree when you've tried it. Mystic Jim designed the assembly and assembled the first batch of devices. We hope to distribute a lot of these, and if you like yours, we'd appreciate it if you passed the word around.
Here's how to make it work:
1. With the power off, plug the clock into joystick port#2 of your Commodore 64 or 128. Remember, it plugs in upside down ! If you need to unplug the RTC, do it carefully- pry it out by the inner plug so you don't pull it apart ! We've made your RTC very solidly, so it'll last a long time if you treat it well.
2. Turn the computer on, and boot GEOS.
3. Copy READ.RTC2.0 and WRITE. RTC2.0 to your bootdisk.
4. Carefully set the time and date for GEOS.
5. Double-click on the WRITE.RTC2.0 icon. This sets the time for the Real Time Clock, and only has to be done this one time. The clock could be unplugged and tossed into a drawer for ten years, and it would still keep the time and date. We haven't actually tried this, so don't come back in ten years and ask for your money back if it doesn't work.
6. Every time you boot GEOS from now on, the auto-execute READ.RTC2.0 will copy the time and date from the Real Time Clock to the GEOS clock. You may also double-click on the READ.RTC2.0 icon, and the REAL Time Clock will be read to the GEOS clock.
The accuracy of the chip in the Real Time Clock is better than one minute per month.
REMINDER
This program reminds the user when special dates arrive. When GEOS is booted on a special day, a reminder is automatically displayed. The GEOS Calendar program is used to set the dates and write the reminder messages. The REMINDER program auto-executes, and it's only necessary to enter the special dates in the Calendar, and they will be displayed on the appropriate day.
*** Note from geoRep Ken: ***
It should be noted that I have never been able to get the REMINDER program to work. GEOS doesn't seem to want to boot with it on the disk. But, I may have just not played around with it enough. Try it out and see if you canget it to work.
DO NOT PLACE THE reminder FILE ON YOUR BOOT DISK UNLESS YOU HAVE A BACKUP BOOTDISK WITH WHICH TO BOOT GEOS AND CORRECT THE MASTER BOOT DISK! (The Backup System disk will serve this purpose, however). OTHERWISE, ONCE THIS GOES ON, IF IT DOESN'T WORK, YOU'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO BOOT AGAIN!
BLE TO BOOT AGAIN!
and they will be displayed on the appropriate day.
